Wales v Scotland – Obliged to watch on TV because of SFA points sytem

Posted in Friendlies, Tartan Army with tags , , on October 18, 2009 by Tartan Army Soldier

The SFA recently announced that Scotland will be travelling to Cardiff for a Wales v Scotland friendly on 14 November. And it looks like I won’t be going:(

I won’t be in Cardiff for two reasons. One, I have tickets to see The Airborne Toxic Event in Oxford. And two, I don’t have 4 away points. That’s right, the SFA are only offering tickets to anyone who has accumulated 4 points over the last 10 away matches.

4 away points! That’s a joke! How many fans have 4 away points? I have none. None at all. And as long as anyone in my position has no chance of even applying for an away ticket thousands of us are trapped in a zero-point rut. And it could easily be solved.

The SFA say that the points system is designed to reward the most loyal fans. Fine. I broadly agree with that. However, some means has to be available to provide opportunity to those who would loyally follow Scotland abroad if given the chance. Something like a point or half point for loyally attending home games? That’s not rocket science and I’m sure it would be difficult to administer. So, SFA, how about it??

Meanwhile, I need to find a Scottish or Welsh pub in Oxford that will be showing the game. Anyone have any suggestions?

Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor – Should they be banned?

Posted in Scotland Squad, Tartan Army, World Cup 2010 with tags , , on April 16, 2009 by Tartan Army Soldier

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been paying attention to the debacle concerning the banning of Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor. What a nonsense! To my mind its another example of the SFA hindering the team’s chances of World Cup qualification. Banning is too extreme a punishment and serves only to disadvantage other players’ efforts.

OK, to be fair, I was away on holiday when the incidents happened. So, I had a little bit of catching up to do. But, from what I gather Ferguson and McGregor were a couple of diddies and DID desereve to be punished. However, how does anyone gain, now or in the future, by the SFA banning them from internationals for life? By excluding these two players the team has been significantly weakened, playing into the hands of our opposition.

And it seems this is a common view. Hamish Husband, speaking for the Tartan Army, said that Scotland fans would welcome Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor back to the Scotland team if they apologised. And more interestingly, George Burley is has distanced himself from the ban. He stated “The Scotland manager doesn’t decide who’s banned,” and went on to say “I stress, I didn’t ban them. The Scottish FA board as a whole decide these matters. I’m not on the board”.So, it seems, to me at least, that the SFA hierarchy are intent on a decision widely unsupported outside their offices.

What now? Unfortunately my faith inthe SFA isn’t great, so I don’t forsee any resolution. It may require someone’s resination, or even worse Scotland failing to qualify, to  show the decision to be ill-considered. Hopefully it won’t come to either.

Scotland defeat Iceland, wish I’d seen it

Posted in Scotland Squad, Tartan Army, World Cup 2010 with tags on April 3, 2009 by Tartan Army Soldier

Thank goodness. A victorious result at Hampden.

Scotland are hopefully back on the route to qualification. Despite the controversial exclusion of Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor, the Scotland squad saw fit to defeat Iceland 2-1. While the Rangers duo were relegatged to the bench, both Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher scored their first goals for Scotland to ensure a victory over the Icelandic visitors. I just wish I’d seen it.

Again, due to some regional, cable-related bonkerness Scotland games don’t appear to merit showing on TV in the USA. As before, we had to follow the game on the internet. As much as I appreiciated the score it would have been so much better to see the Scotland squad in action. And I wouldn’t have had to spend the day in a museum:(

Minor disappointments aside, am glad we’re back on winning form and hope we see more of the same.

Holland v Scotland venue confirmed as Amsterdam

Scotland’s World Cup qualifier against Holland has been confirmed as taking pace in Amsterdam. The SFA have just declared the venue for the match on 28 March as being the Arena Stadium, home of AFAC Ajax. With a capacity of 51,600, Scotland fan stand to be given an allocation of 5,100 tickets.

Amsterdam Arena

Amsterdam Arena

Unfortunately, I’m going to miss this match. Heading to Amsterdam with the Tartan Army would have been a pile of fun, but I’ve been asked over to America to see a friend. With a bit of luck though I hope to find a cable channel showing the match, and hopefully see a Scottish goal or two.

Iceland 1-2 Scotland – Scotland back on form?

Posted in Tartan Army, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , on September 11, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

Result! A victory in Iceland:) Three points in the bag, and hopefully Scotland are back on the path to glory.

Another trip to the Famous 3 Kings in West Kensington. The place was mobbed! Irish, Germans, Finns, some Icelanders, a few of our friends from Croatia and one or two English. There was plenty going on, but we were obviosly focused on the Scotland game. OK, we were listening out a bit to the next room for Croat goals ;-)

The Scotland start seemed a bit shakey. They had little rhythm and, although there didn’t seem any major danger of a Iceland goal, Scotland weren’t exactly in charge of the game. Then Kirk Broadfoot decided to put Scotland in charge, heading the ball firmly into the net. We were ahead!! The pub went mental!! Burley’s men then seemed to step up a gear, ensuring a 1-0 half-time lead.

The second half started and we were all on a high. Scotland continues to dominate and we were all fairly confident we were fgoing to hang on to the lead. Then, with justover 10 minutes gone in the second half Sigurdsson fouled McFadden to give Scotland a penalty. Nice:-) After a gut-wrenching moment when Sturluson saved the lacklustre effort Mcfadden made up for his mistake by pouncing on the rebound to put Scotland 2 goals ahead. Fantasitc!

Then another penalty. Unfortunately this one was for Iceland. Scotland captain, Stephen McManus, handled the ball in the penalty box, earning himself a red card, and a penalty for Iceland, which they easily converted. Iceland were back in the game.

Quarter an hour to go. The tension was immense. Could we hold on to the end? Luckily we did. Helguson came close to equalising, but his shot rebounded off Caldwell, giving Geroge Burley his first victory as Scotland manager.

Scotland are now placed second equal in World Cup Group 9 – a welcome improvement.

Macedonia 1-0 Scotland – Nightmare in Skopje

Posted in George Burley, Scotland Coach, Tartan Army, Tartan Army Abroad, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , , on September 8, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

What a nightmare! 1 game into the new World Cup championship and it isn’t looking too pretty. A 1-0 defeat at the hands of the not-so-mighty Macedonia puts Scotland at the wrong end of Group 9.

We had travelled far for this match. 2 of us flew to London, met 3 more in London, flown to Sofia and taken a taxi to Skopje – no mean feat. Although we had no tickets, we were looking forward to a good game, and a respectable result. And we would enjoy it with the 3000-strong Tartan Army.

Having found out where to buy tickets we readied ourselves for the game. The traditional march to the stadium was along the banks of the River Vardar – a reliably good-natured affair. Scotland and Macedianian fans joined each other in singing and friendly banter. Spirits were high as we approached the gates.

Then, tragedy. We were not allowed to enter the stadium. Everyone had reached the gates and was expecting to get in to see the match. The Skopje police had other ideas. Turned out in full riot gear, they didn’t want any of us inside, and they were ready for a battle should anyone have a problem with that! Polite words fail me.

Obviously there was pure no violence. We had been shafted, but there are better ways of dealing with this kind of problem. In the meantime we settled down to watch the game in one of the stadium-side bars. A TV screen and beers would have to suffice.

The match kicked off, and a second distaster. Macedonia opened the scoring in under 5 minutes. Macedoni’s Goran Maznov won a free kick when he fell (???) on the edge of the penalty area. Despite Scotland goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, brilliantly deflecting Sedloski’s effort the ball struck the post only for Naumoski to drill it into the net. Absolutely gutting!

Scotland tried to equalise. However their efforts were lacklustre. The 35oC heat probably wasn’t helping. Barry Robson’s 20th minute corner was squandered, then 10 minutes laterMcfaden hesitated at the edge of the box missing what could have been a great opportunity. The first half ended 1-0.

The second half was slightly better, but only because Macedonia didn’t score. We should have been awarded a penalty when Milosevski seemed to foul McFadden in the box. Unfortunately, the referee didn’t agree. And to be honest, we were pretty dire. Whetherit was the monster heat or lack of passion we didn’t seem likely to equalise. And the reast is history.

We returned to the city centre dejected, thoughts turning to Wednesday’s forthcoming clash with Iceland. And many beers were downed, sadly not in celebration.

Scotland v Norway tickets available 30th August

Posted in Tartan Army, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , on August 28, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

Tickets for the Scotland v Norway World Cup qualifier go on sale to Scotland Supporters Club members on 30 August. One ticket will be available to each member.

I’m really looking forward to this match. The two teams are fairly well matched and there is everything to play for. Scotland will be expected to win, but Norway are by no way pushovers. Being rated ahead of the Norwegians, we should take all 3 points. However, the visitors will have nothing to lose and heaps to gain if they can steal a point or three, and let’s not forget that the last time the Norwegians came to Hampden they went home with 3 points. A repeat of this would be tragic.

Regardless of past Scotland v Norway results my money is on a Scottish victory:-) Allan, our ticketmaster, has wasted no time and is already organising the our seats.

*** Update: Public tickets on sale ***
The general public can now buy tickets for the Scotland v Norway match, and they will be available from 9am Wednesday 24 September until mid-night on Sunday 28 September. Its a random ballot, with details and registration at www.ticketlink.co.uk/scotlandballot.

Macedonia v Scotland ticket allocation

Posted in Tartan Army, Tartan Army Abroad, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , on July 27, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

Bad news for anyone hoping to attend the Macedonia v Scotland match in September – the Tartan Army have been awarded a meagre 1000 tickets. Because of this the SFA have decided to offer tickets only to fans who have accumulated 5 points. This pretty much rules me out, and all my friends. So, anyone know a good pub in Skopje where we can watch the game?

Scotland v Argentina called off. Now Scotland v Spain?

Posted in Friendlies, Scotland Squad, Tartan Army with tags , , , , on July 16, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

Scotland won’t be playing Argentina this year. After Scotland fans expressed theier views on the TAMB, the SFA have decided the hike in ticket prices (up to £50?) will be sufficiently unwelcome to make it unfeasible to hold the match.

So what now?? One of my pals said “Maybe we could play England”. Unfortunately that can’t happen as England will be facing Germany that night. It was also mentioned that Spain are available. How true that is I can’t say, but it would make for an interesting match. The Spanish are currently ranked number one in the world, so the Scotland team would be gaining from exposure to superior opposition, probably without the fans paying through the nose for the pleasure.

George Burley all but vetos Iran v Scotland match

Posted in Friendlies, George Burley, Scotland Coach, Scotland Squad, Tartan Army, Tartan Army Abroad with tags , , on March 11, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

Iran v Scotland isn’t looking likely. Scotland coach, George Burley has indicated his doubts about the proposed Scotland friendly in Tehran. As for suggestions of a England v Scotland tie, Old Firm commitments are to blame for this lost opportunity.

Both Rangers and Celtic are planning tours in the late end of May. With a significant proportion of the Scotland squad made up of Celtic and Rangers players that would, in effect, prevent half the team from being able to attend any match late in May.

Burley however remains intent on another friendly tie and would ” like to get something sorted for May”, presumably at Hampden and earlier in the month.

One consolation, whatever match is organised, at least we’ll be able to enjoy a wee bevvy after the game. Celebrations in Tehran would have been a bit non-alcoholic.
