Spain v Scotland venue confirmed

The Spanish FA have confirmed the venue for the Spain v Scotland match in October. The game will be played in the Costa Blanca, at the Estadio Rico Perez stadium in Alicante.

This is almost perfect. The Costa Blanca is a fantastic place. I’ve been to Alicante a couple of times and its got excellent bars and great nightlife. And if everywhere is crowded out I’m sure there will be plenty of beach parties going on. Going there will be a stack of fun.

There could be a lot riding on this match. It’s Scotland’s final game in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, and if we go there needing points it going to be the toughest match ever. The tensions will be stratospheric. Going up against the world champions will not be easy. Hopefully that won’t be the case. That said, it would be so good to see Scotland get some points against Spain.

Whatever the scenario, I’m hoping to get over there. I’ll be straight in there as soon as tickets are available.

The SFA recently reported that they have organised a Scotland v Denmark friendly for 10th August this year.

This challenge match will precede the Euro 2012 home double-header against Czech Republic and Lithuania, on the 3rd and 6th September. It is hoped that it will provide the players with the necessary preparation to face these two matches and achieve the necessary points.

Scotland v Brazil result – Scotland 0 – 2 Brazil

Posted in Friendlies with tags , on March 28, 2011 by Tartan Army Soldier

We made it to the Emirates Stadium. Having rescheduled flights back to London after my brother’s stag weekend we made it back to Heathrow for shortly after 8 am. Everyone was knackered, but it was going to be worth it. We’d managed a few hours sleep and were waiting to see some football.

The Brazilians were outstanding. Leading from the start, they never let up. But Scotland didn’t give up, doing their best to keep up with the South Americans. The defended well, but our lone forward Kenny Miller barely touched the ball. And the Brazilians kept piling on the pressure with a near goal after 20 minutes, saved only by the cross bar. But as minute ticked by we were still holding them off. If we could just hold out to half time.

Tragedy!! A 41 minute goal by Brazil’s Neymar put paid to any chance of not ending the first half second-best. The South Americans finally converted their chances, scoring when Santos struck the ball to an unmarked Neymar who put it squarely in the net. The heart of every Scotsman in the stadium sank. NO!!!!! Brazil went a head 1-0. And that was the score when the first half ended.

After 15 minutes moods weren’t lifting. It was not looking good for Scotland and the fans were less than optimistic. If the team could lift their game it might be possible. If they played like the first half, forget it. Then the second half started and Charlie Adam goes and gives the ball away, almost leading a Neymar goal which luckily goes just over the crossbar.

And Brazil continued to dominate. Despite two substitutions, bringing on Barry Bannan and Kris Commons for James McArthur and Steven Whittaker, there was no change in performance. At least we were only 1-0 down. Still a chance to sneak an equalizer.

Then, worst of all nightmares, Charlie Adam’s day get even worse as he floors Neymar, conceding a penalty. A second Brazilian goal seemed certain. And Neymar confirmed that with a sound penalty strike. Brazil were two goals ahead.

That essentially killed the game. Any chance Scotland had of getting a draw had near enough vanished. A further substitution, bringing on Robert Snodgrass for Charlie Adam wasn’t enough and the game never moved in our favour. The mood in the crowd was dire. Scotland continued to be outplayed and never looked like getting a consolation goal. A 2-0 defeat by a far superior opposition was how the day ended. Hopefully some lessons learned for future games.

Time for consolation beers…

Scotland v Brazil tickets on sale from 22 Feb

The SFA have secured every SSC member a ticket for the Scotland v Brazil match at the Emirates Stadium. 2,500 tickes will cost £30 with the remainder being priced at £35.

Reading between lines, I don’t think anyone expects too many Brazilian fans. I could find no mention of a quota of tickets for the Brazilain support. So, it may be that the stadium will be full of Scotland fans and all Scotland supporters, including those not in the SSC, will be able to buy tickets for this match.

Hopefully there will also be a few Brazilains fans present. It’d be good to have some rival support. The atmosphere would benefit, and let’s be honest, the pretty ladies we often see in the Brazilain crowds would be a pleasant addition to a sea of male faces;)

Anyhoo, tickets go on sale tomorrow at http://www.ticketlink.co.uk/scotlandtickets

Scotland v Brazil at the Emirates Stadium in March

Posted in Friendlies, Scotland Squad, Tartan Army with tags , on February 15, 2011 by Tartan Army Soldier

The SFA announced today that the Scotland Squad will play Brazil in London, at the Emirates Stadium, on Sunday, 27 March. Kick off will be at 2.00pm.

There will be great anticipation around this fixture. It will be the first time Scotland have faced Brazil since the opening match of World Cup France 1998 and the Scotland team’s first trip to London since beating the English 1-0 at Wembley in 1999.

I’m going need to find a pub to watch the game. I’ll be in Berlin for my wee brother’s stag weekend, so I’m hoping we can find a sports bar. We need to fly back shortly after the match, so somewhere in/near the airport would be good. Am sure we’ll sort something out, but if anyone knows of anywhere please leave a comment.

Anyhoo, it should be a good game. It’ll be a minor miracle of we win, but the same was said a few years ago in France :)

Scotland defeat Northern Ireland in impressive 3-0 victory

Posted in Scotland Squad on February 9, 2011 by Tartan Army Soldier

I’m almost shocked. Scotland won a match, defeating Northern Ireland 3-0 in the Carling Nations Cup.

Well it looks like the Scotland team may have turned a corner. After a string of disappointing results they have pulled off a 3-0 defeat of Northern Ireland, and done so in impressive style.

Kenny Miller, James McArthur and Kris Commons were responsible for the goals. Miller opened the scoring, stabbing the ball into the net after 19 minutes. James McArthur added the second for the dominant Scots when his cross powered into the the top corner. Kris Commons cemented the victory with a third, impressive, goal in the 51 minutes, converting a superb pass from Steven Naismith.

Can Scotland now go onto win the Carling Nations Cup? Well, it’s looking a lot more promising.

FIFA say no to World Cup England 2018

England won’t be hosting World Cup 2018. FIFA have instead selected Russia to organise this event.

England presented what they believed to be a winning bid to FIFA. Being the ‘home of football’, having all the required stadiums and facilities and a solid financial plan, they were optimistic that the World Cup finals 2018 were destined for English shores. FIFA, however had other plans.

Scotland 2 – 3 Spain – beaten by world champions

Posted in Craig Levein, Euro 2012, Tartan Army on October 12, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

Scotland lost. Again.

I’m not exactly over the moon. Once again the Scotland team has ended a match with a worthless result. There were some good moments, but that doesn’t earn any points unless the ball finds the goal net. So, we sink to 3rd place in Group I while the Czech Republic move into second place after a decisive victory over Liechtenstien.

As I said there were some sparks of possibility in the match. Scotland did have their share of possession in the first half, much more so that on Friday. A first minute Scottish corner unfortunately bore no fruit, but even though the Spanish pressed hard and forced many saves, Scotland pressed on and almost scored with a James Morrison shot at goal. And the Scottish goal remained empty.  But it couldn’t last. Hand ball by Whittaker in the 44th minute allowed Spain a penalty which Villa sadly converted. Scotland finished the first half 1-0 down.

There were more goals in the second half. Scotland started respectably, but Spain weren’t taking it easy. After initially unsuccessful efforts  Iniesta put Spain further into the lead with a 55th minute goal. Tragedy!

But Scotland weren’t in the mood to give up. The responded immediately, quickly sending the ball up to the Spanish end of the pitch where Miller directed a cross between defenders Pique and Ramos and keeper Casillas,  for Naismith to intercept and head the ball into the net from six yards.  Scotland seemed to be on the way back.

Then, amazingly, Spain gifted Scotland an equalizer, Pique putting the ball into the Spanish net. Was this going to be a shock victory for Scotland.

We could hope, but hat was all it was going to be. With less than 11 minutes to go McManus inexplicably misjudged the ball, giving substitute Llorente the opportunity to side-foot the ball past McGregor to score the final goal of the evening, Spain finishing deserved victors.

All said, Scotland played a better game than on Friday. Unfortunately this still wasn’t enough.
