Czech Republic 1 – 0 Scotland – a deserved defeat

Posted in Craig Levein, Euro 2012, Tartan Army with tags , on October 9, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

Last night’s display by the Scotland team was shameful! We lost, or more correctly threw away the game to a mediocre Czech Republic team. Three points, or at least a draw were ours’ for the taking, But it seems that was too much to ask.

Scotland Fans in Prague

The Czechs have a formidable reputation. Their recent history has shown them capable of great things and a side of which we need to be wary. However, in the past few months they have fallen in stature quite significantly. They even lost at home to Lithuania 4 weeks ago. So, what on earth was Craig Levein doing putting out an unambitious 4-6-0 formation!!!

Were we even wanting or hoping to win??? The uninspiring, strikerless formation smacks of a timid lack of ambition. It tells me that Levein was going after a draw, and no more. And, if that’s what I think, I can only imagine what they players thought – going out there to face a beatable team with the most defensive formation anyone has ever seen. They must have been truly uninspired.

I should give credit where credit is due. Scotland played a defensive game very well. For the majority of the match the defenders played an excellent game. And McGregor saved us numerous times.

But the Czechs were there for the taking. Their defence was shaky, and we could have scored at least a couple of goals given the chance. But, having no strikers wasn’t going to help that happen. Meanwhile the Czechs showed the ambition that we lacked and kept up the pressure, eventually getting the goal they needed. And the rest is now history.

I have one word for Craig Levein. Resign.

Scotland 2 – 1 Liechtenstein – A shambles of a victory

Posted in Euro 2012, Tartan Army with tags , on September 8, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

What a nightmare? Scotland may have won 3 points last night, but they did so in the most shambolic fashion I have ever seen. Having to come from behind, at home, against one of the lowest ranked teams in Europe, and waiting until the seventh minute of five minutes extra time to score the winning goal is not the stuff of champions. I am almost ashamed.

We were in the Rob Roy bar. As ever there was a great atmosphere. We were all optimistic of an impressive win. Liechtenstein, being ranked 141 in the world, should have been a pushover. How wrong we all were.

Liechtenstein were first to score. After a first half to forget the game quickly turned in the visitors’ favour with a 46th minute goal. Nightmare! We couldn’t afford to lose this game! And not to this ‘minnow’.

The remainder of the game was desperate. We were desperate to see some Scotland goals. And the Scotland squad were just desperate. Then, at last, after 63 minutes a Robson cross headed into the path of Miller leveled the score as the striker drove the ball home from 15 yards. Now Scotland had a chance.

But still it was dire viewing. The Scotland Squad obviously want to qualify to the Euro 2012 finals. Don’t they? Well, they didn’t show it. Another thirty-odd minutes and into injury time it didn’t look good. Was this going to be remembered as the low-point of Scottish international football? It certainly looked that way.

Unbelievable!! Just when it was looking like Craig Levein was destined for the Job Centre, McManus rose above the Liechtenstein defence to send the ball into the visitors’ net, and Hampden into a roar tinged with a big streak of relief. 2-1 to Scotland. What a relief.

Lithuania 0 – 0 Scotland – A bad start to Euro qualification

Posted in Euro 2012, Tartan Army with tags on September 4, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

Scotland had to win. With teams like Spain and the Czech Republic in our group, we needed all the points we can get against the other teams. So 6 points out of the first two games, against Lithuania and Liechtenstein, had to be a necessity. Well, now that isn’t going to happen.

I guess we didn’t play too bad. There were a few good chances by Scotland and we were the better team with more shots at goal than the opposition. However it was the same problem as in many other games – we just can’t seem to score. As one of the pundits pointed out, Scotland haven’t scored a competitive goal away from home in two years, the last goal being James McFadden’s goal against Iceland in 2008.

Now we face Liechtenstein on Tuesday, at Hampden. A decisive victory must be on the cards. 3-0? 4-0? Maybe then, with an impressive victory behind them the Scotland squad can go on and take some points from Spain or (more realistically) the Czechs.

Sweden 3 – 0 Scotland – Levein’s Scotland disappoint

Posted in Friendlies, Scotland Squad, Tartan Army Abroad on August 17, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

Another disappointment..

I had thought about going to Sweden to watch this match. Luckily I didn’t have enough holiday time left to make it possible. Spending a load of money to see Levein’s Scotland fail would have been too painful.

The game was dire. Pretty much from the start Sweden were in control. We were down a goal by the third minute. Nightmare. Scotland did have some chances, but nothing came from it. Then Sweden went further ahead with a Bajrami goal leaving Scotland trailing 2-0 at half-time.

The second half didn’t see any improvements. Despite a passionate start and a close shot at goal by McFadden the ball was never in serious threat of landing in the Sweden net. And the hosts scored again making it 3 – 0. After that there was still a further 35 minutes to go. And to be perfectly honest I am too depressed to keep writing about it.

I feel sorry for one of my brothers who was there. My other brother claimed he was too busy at work to go to Sweden. He said “Its the end of month accounts”, which considering the date, seems an odd reason. Maybe his time at the Norways game has dulled his enthusiasm. Not that I criticise.

I just hope the team can find some form by the start of the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

England 0 – 0 Algeria

LOL. I am so glad I’m not English. Obvious reasons aside, last night’s match was the dullest, most uninspiring 90 minutes of football I have ever seen. Luckily, I greatly appreciate the scoreline.

So far it doesn’t look great for England. Slovenia are most likely to win the group, and England’s performance so far doesn’t suggest they will stand in their way. Then it’s likely to be USA or England taking second place. With an easier match, I reckon it’s going to be USA. Enough said.

Come on Slovenia! Go USA!

George Burley to manage Crystal Palace

Posted in George Burley on June 18, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

Good news for George Burley. The ex-Scotland coach is to be the new coach for London team Crystal Palace.

Sacked in Novemeber 2009 for poor team performance and failure to qualify for the World Cup finals, Burley has been out of work for the past seven months. Now Crystal Palace, who only just escaped relegation on the last day of the English league season have given Burley a route back into the game.

Burley will be assisted by another Scotsman and Crystal Palace legend Dougie Freedman, who was previously regarded as a likely candidate for the role.

England 1 – 1 USA

Posted in England, World Cup, World Cup 2010 on June 12, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

England has been going bonkers about it all day. It was time for the England team to start their World Cup 2010 campaign, facing the USA at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenberg. England were, not surprisingly, favourites to win.

England started well. Gerrard quickly helped them take the lead after only 4 minutes. This was to underline the English dominance of most of the the first half. However, the USA goalie was outstanding keeping England attacks from extending the lead.

The USA never stopped trying to get back into the match. And this eventually payed off. With a little help from England goalkeeper, Robert Green’s fumble, Clint Dempsey shot the ball over line. USA were back in the game. And that was how the first half ended.

There were no goals in the the second half.  The English threatened the US goal a few times but the American keeper saw off the English attacks, leaving the scoreline 1-1. And that was pretty much it.

Beth, the GF in USA, was quite pleased.

England prepare for the World Cup, but I’m supporting USA

Posted in England, World Cup, World Cup 2010 on June 5, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

It’s almost started. World Cup 2010 is almost here. And living in England, I know this only too well.

England flags

Everywhere I go people are getting ready for the football to begin. All around flags are flying from cars and hanging in from bedroom windows. I only have to step out of my front door to see it ‘slap-bang’ in my face.

I guess I can’t really blame them. It is England, the fans are loyally supporting their country, and I have to suffer it as long as I choose to live here. But, spending last weekend in Glasgow I appreciated a nice break from it all. Being dragged to a bar to watch the England v Japan World Cup warm-up match by some well-meaning friend was just right out of the question.

USA Team

USA Team

Anyway I’ll have to make the best of it. I’m just going to enjoy the football and hope the usual numbnut pundits aren’t too much of a pain. Plus, I’m lucky to being heading off to the USA to see my American girlfriend. So, I’ll miss the English TV commentary for the second half of the tournament. And, even better, I have a perfectly respectable reason to hope England get stuffed in their opening game. Come on USA!!!

Beckham delivers 2018 World Cup bid

Posted in England, FIFA, World Cup on May 14, 2010 by Tartan Army Soldier

England have submitted an application to host World Cup 2018. As reported by the BBC, David Beckham has delivered England FA’s bid to FIFA chief Sepp Blatter. And with Blatter describing England as “the motherland of football” it may be that England are already lined up to host the event.

So what does it mean for Scotland fans? On one hand if England win we’ll never hear the end of it. The constant media gloating will be even worse than the 1966 droning. However if they fail to win the pundits will be shut up for a while. And, with it being a while since a home team won the world cup the odds are against England.

I’m in favour of England’s bid. With most venues being in easy travelling distance there will be no need to scramble about for flights, accommodation, etc, all of which I will appreciate greatly.

I just hope the Scotland team are up to qualifying.
