Chris Iwelumo spoiled my weekend

Posted in FIFA, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , , on October 12, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

I am gutted! We should have won. OK, it wouldn’t have been a result to shout too loud about, but 3 points is 3 points and a step closer to South Africa. But no. With a perfect chance to be the hero of the day, Chris Iwelumo let the opportunity go begging. Forgiveness is not easy to find.:-(

We travelled over 400 miles for that disappointment! Noone was expecting a mass of goals or Pele-esque show of skill, but a victory would have been nice. Norway are ranked below Scotland for a reason. This would suggest to me that Scotland should be able to secure 3 points at home. Obviously I am misguided!!

George Burley supposedly promised continuity following the 2-1 victory in Iceland. Well, that didn’t work out. Despite having more of the possession, we rarely seemed likely to score. The Norwegians put Gordon under pressure numerours times, our goalkeeper saving us a mumberof times. Then when we had the best chanceof the match Chris Iwelumo decides to punt the ball wide from 3 yards. What could have been an outstanding debut was wasted, leaving the Hampden loyal shocked and dejected. And that was as good as it got.

Iceland 1-2 Scotland – Scotland back on form?

Posted in Tartan Army, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , on September 11, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

Result! A victory in Iceland:) Three points in the bag, and hopefully Scotland are back on the path to glory.

Another trip to the Famous 3 Kings in West Kensington. The place was mobbed! Irish, Germans, Finns, some Icelanders, a few of our friends from Croatia and one or two English. There was plenty going on, but we were obviosly focused on the Scotland game. OK, we were listening out a bit to the next room for Croat goals ;-)

The Scotland start seemed a bit shakey. They had little rhythm and, although there didn’t seem any major danger of a Iceland goal, Scotland weren’t exactly in charge of the game. Then Kirk Broadfoot decided to put Scotland in charge, heading the ball firmly into the net. We were ahead!! The pub went mental!! Burley’s men then seemed to step up a gear, ensuring a 1-0 half-time lead.

The second half started and we were all on a high. Scotland continues to dominate and we were all fairly confident we were fgoing to hang on to the lead. Then, with justover 10 minutes gone in the second half Sigurdsson fouled McFadden to give Scotland a penalty. Nice:-) After a gut-wrenching moment when Sturluson saved the lacklustre effort Mcfadden made up for his mistake by pouncing on the rebound to put Scotland 2 goals ahead. Fantasitc!

Then another penalty. Unfortunately this one was for Iceland. Scotland captain, Stephen McManus, handled the ball in the penalty box, earning himself a red card, and a penalty for Iceland, which they easily converted. Iceland were back in the game.

Quarter an hour to go. The tension was immense. Could we hold on to the end? Luckily we did. Helguson came close to equalising, but his shot rebounded off Caldwell, giving Geroge Burley his first victory as Scotland manager.

Scotland are now placed second equal in World Cup Group 9 – a welcome improvement.

Scotland v Norway tickets available 30th August

Posted in Tartan Army, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , on August 28, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

Tickets for the Scotland v Norway World Cup qualifier go on sale to Scotland Supporters Club members on 30 August. One ticket will be available to each member.

I’m really looking forward to this match. The two teams are fairly well matched and there is everything to play for. Scotland will be expected to win, but Norway are by no way pushovers. Being rated ahead of the Norwegians, we should take all 3 points. However, the visitors will have nothing to lose and heaps to gain if they can steal a point or three, and let’s not forget that the last time the Norwegians came to Hampden they went home with 3 points. A repeat of this would be tragic.

Regardless of past Scotland v Norway results my money is on a Scottish victory:-) Allan, our ticketmaster, has wasted no time and is already organising the our seats.

*** Update: Public tickets on sale ***
The general public can now buy tickets for the Scotland v Norway match, and they will be available from 9am Wednesday 24 September until mid-night on Sunday 28 September. Its a random ballot, with details and registration at www.ticketlink.co.uk/scotlandballot.

World Cup 2010 – South Africa in doubt

Posted in FIFA, World Cup 2010 with tags , , , on February 11, 2008 by Tartan Army Soldier

I’ve just been reading about the woes concerning South Africa and theor ability to hold the Wold Cup in 2010. It seems that past doubts are gathering steam. With security concerns as well as monetary and infrastructure problems to contend with there is talk about moving the competition to another nation. With the occasional Scotland fan suggesting “England deserve it more than South Africa” matters are indeed dire.

South Africa does not have the reputation of being the safest destination. However, with the money involved in the World Cup and the certain massive influx of tourists and their money, criminal gangs and opportunists are believed to be looking to exploit the event to thier own ends. And they arn’t the only ones. As well as pickpockets and muggers, organised crime inside South Africa and from surrounding countries are thought to be looking to make massive profits from drugs and prostitution. On top of that there will be the expected accompaniment of violence. None of it looks pleasant.

Doubts have been heightened lately with the murder of Austrian Soccer star Peter Burgstaller. The ex-SV Salzburg goalkeeper was shot dead on a golf course near Durban, the motive for which was believed to be robbery.

With all the bad publicity about South Africa, suggestions are being made to move the competition. Opinions have been expressed that the event should be hosted in a safer, more reliable country. Germany is the most obvious nation. Having just hosted a successful World Cup, everyone can be assured of a relatively safe, financially stable competition. Other possible venues are the USA, Australia and England, all of which have modern stadiums and relatively low crime.

It would be a shame if South Africa were to lose out on World Cup 2010. However, I have to say I’m not overly keen on getting mugged, or worse. While in Lithuania recently, fans were getting mugged on a regular basis. Indeed one of the guys in our hostel was turned over by Lithuanian thugs leaving him in a really bad way. With that in mind I think that safety does deserve to be a primary concern. Plus any failing for the safety of fans can only have a detrimental effect for the future of the competition as a whole.

If the venue changes, I vote Australia then England on the basis of Australia not having hosted the event and England being close at hand for Scotland fans. Let’s hope its not necessary.
