Scotland’s Euro chances kept alive with 1 – 1 draw in Dublin

The Scotland team are on a roll these days. After a 1 – 0 friendly victory over Qatar, the expectation was that they were going to do well against the Irish Republic. And they didn’t fail.

We made our way to The Temperance, a pub in Putney that is currently home to the local Aberdeen Supporters Club and has, for us at least, become the new pub of choice for Scotland fans in London. It wasn’t as busy as it had been for the Gibraltar match, but there were quite a few Scottish voices to heard.

It didn’t look good in the first half. Scotland didn’t start well. Ireland looked a lot more lively, taking most of the possession. They were definitely outplaying us. Then, as the first half was nearing its end, Ireland scored. John Walters put the hosts ahead with a close range shot. It looked offside, but it would be hard to say that the Irish didn’t deserve the lead. Not a good end to the first 45 minutes.

Scotland weren’t giving up, and upped their game for the second half. Gordon Strachan must have said something inspiring (or threatening?) as they seemed much more enthused and determined. And it quickly paid off. A Shaun Maloney strike deflected off John O’Shea to provide a much-needed equalizer.

And that was how it ended. Scotland have held steady in third position in Group D. So far, it looks like they have every chance of going to France 2016.
