Scotland losses leaves Euro 2016 qualification in doubt

I’m gutted! No points out of six at the weekend leaves Scotland’s chance of qualifying for the Euro 2016 finals in serious doubt.

First there was the Georgia match. Georgia are nowhere near as good a they were when Scotland last faced them in Tbilisi. Like many, I hoped the Scotland squad could take at least a point from the Georgians. No, it wasn’t to be. 1 – 0 to Georgia was the final score.

Then there was the Germany match. Being that they are the World Champions, it was never going to be easy, even at Hampden Park. Compared to the previous match, this was a much more entertaining affair. Germany opened the scoring with a Thomas Muller strike in the 18th minute. Hummels’ own goal (under pressure from an attacking Scotland) leveled the score in the 28th minute. That’ll do nicely. But the 1 – 1 score didn’t last long thanks to a Muller strike 6 minutes later. McArthur equalised in the 43rd minute, but even that wasn’t enough when Gundogan sealed the game for the Germans with a 54th minute match decided. It was ninety minutes of great football, but with the wrong outcome, 3 – 2 in Germany’s favour.

As ever, Scotland have left it to the last possible opportunity to qualify. Realistically, they need to win both upcoming matches – against Poland at Hampden and Gibraltar away from home. And hopefully the Republic of Ireland will do us the service of losing both their games. No problem.
